How to remove your iCloud Account on your MacBook

If you’re selling a MacBook to us, you’ll need to remove your iCloud account before sending it. If you don’t, your payment may be delayed.

Removing your iCloud account is quick and easy, and can be completed using your device or via the iCloud website. Just select your device to find out how to remove your iCloud account!

Removing iCloud from MacBook and MacBook Pro

If you're using macOS Catalina or earlier:

  1. Click the Apple menu < System Preferences
  2. Click Apple ID
  3. Untick the box next to Find My Mac
  4. Enter your Apple ID password when prompted
  5. Go back to Apple Account and click Sign out

If you're using macOS Monterey or later:

  1. Click the Apple menu < System Settings
  2. In the sidebar, select Apple Account < iCloud < Device Security < Find My Mac
  3. Toggle Find My Mac off
  4. Enter your Apple Account password when prompted
  5. Go back to Apple Account and click Sign out

Please note: turning off Find My Mac automatically disables Activation Lock once verified. If Touch ID is set up, macOS Tahoe may ask for Touch ID + password together for confirmation.

Removing your iCloud account remotely using your PC or laptop

  1. Switch off your MacBook
  2. Log into the iCloud website from a PC or laptop using your Apple ID
  3. Click Find My
  4. Click on the All Devices drop-down menu and select your device
  5. Click Remove Account
  6. Click Remove on the confirmation message

Please note: if you delete any data manually while signed into iCloud, this will remove the content from your iCloud account and any linked devices.

Troubleshooting

Go to Settings < Screen Time < Content & Privacy Restrictions < Account Changes < Allow. This lets you make changes to your Apple ID and iCloud settings.

If your MacBook is managed by your company or school (through MDM), only the system administrator can change or remove Apple ID settings. You'll need to contact your IT admin for help.

This usually happens when your MacBook can’t connect to Apple’s servers. Check your Wi-Fi or internet connection, then try signing out again.

If your MacBook is currently syncing or backing up data, you might not be able to sign out straight away. Wait a few minutes or restart your MacBook, then try again.
